Laparoscopic surgery launched a revolution in surgery by making many procedures easier on patients. Our surgeons are experienced in performing advanced laparoscopic procedures that would otherwise require an open approach and longer recovery period.
Southwest Surgical Associates' surgeons are committed to making the latest surgical techniques available to patients in Houston, Sugar Land, Katy and the surrounding communities. We want to improve your health and your overall surgical experience.
What is Laparoscopic Surgery?
Put simply, laparoscopic surgery is surgery performed using tiny incisions through which surgeons insert a laparoscope and long instruments. This technique is in contrast to traditional surgery in which one large, open incision is used.
A laparoscope is a narrow tube that can be inserted into the abdominal cavity through a short incision and can be connected to a video monitor. Using a laparoscope and long instruments inserted through ¼-inch to ½-inch incisions, the surgeons perform the procedure by manipulating the instruments and watching their movements and the internal organs on a video monitor.
With laparoscopic surgery, operations that previously required extended hospital stays are now frequently performed as outpatient procedures.
The main advantages of laparoscopic surgery include:
- Better visualization
- Shorter hospital stays
- Quicker recovery
- Smaller scars
- Less pain
Southwest Surgical Associates' physicians have years of experience in performing laparoscopic surgery, and they use the technique for numerous procedures, including diagnosis and biopsy, appendectomy, gallbladder removal, and cancer staging.
Advanced Laparoscopic Procedures
Many general surgeons now perform laparoscopic surgery, but there are some procedures that require advanced skills to be performed laparoscopically. Southwest Surgical Associates surgeons have the advanced skills and training necessary to successfully perform these cases.
Advanced laparoscopic procedures routinely performed by Southwest Surgical Associates' surgeons include:
- Inguinal hernia repairs
- Ventral hernia repairs
- Gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) procedures
- Colon and small bowel resections
- Excisions of various abdominal tumors
- Weight loss surgery
